BARANGAY CALLANGUIGAN

Historical Background

In 1950, a group of people namely Mr. Victor Bilagot, Mr. Palek and his brother from  Mountain Province; Mr Bantoc and Mr. Bagis from Benguet with their families left their homeland, to settle in the new land.

During that time, this group of people embarked on a move to transform the land, the vast vegetations or vast fertile land, they call their own. So the land was cleared, tilled and planted with crops through the “kaingin system” to provide food and sustain life. Until such time, these settlers decided to go back their own hometown to invite more of their relatives for the new land. Invited was Reverend Simon Bilagot, Mr. Balasya Oting. Mr. Ricardo Donulos and Andres Bocales.

After the arrival of this second group of settlers, captivated by the abundance of life-giving food, vast vegetation or vast fertile land, this people feel contented and comfortable with the place. Their arrival brought further improvements to the place to benefit themselves, they finally agreed to subdivide the land by themselves with the use of a rope as measurement to give way to development; land cultivation and building up of their houses.

In year 1952, Reverend Simon Bilagot requested the assistance of President Ramon Magsaysay and Congressman Dangwa of Benguet regarding the  subdivision of the land for the benefit of the settlers. His request was granted . Relocation, subdivision and segregation of the Tabuk to San Jose road were done. In the event of naming the place, Congressman Dangwa inquired from the two fellows, Mr.Dalayaw, and Mr. Calague,   Gaddang natives, the name of the nearby mountain and they answered as ‘Kakalingaan’. Through this, Congressman Dangwa adopted then the word “Kalingaan” or Kalangigan, as the name of the place with no specific municipality to affiliate.

At the time, when their population was small and their dwellings were few still and lived a distance away from each other, their sign of ‘pangangamusta’ was ringing of empty cans in the morning and late in the afternoon. Until time came Mr. Belan, a native of Benguet was murdered and killed by the Kalinga. From that time on this group of people were afraid due to the incident and decided to group their houses closer to each other; Group 1 stayed in Kalangigan, Group 2 in Malalao, and Group 3 in CAligyan respectively.

As years passed by, the population of Malalao increased in number and so they were first declared as Barangay and affiliated with Tabuk, Kalinga Apayao, under the leadership of Barangay Captain Rosito Bilagot. And Kalangigan affiliated with it as a sitio.

Meantime in 1980, Kalangigan existed as two sitios; Sitio Kalangigan, Malalao, Tabuk, Kalinga Apayao and Sitio Caramoc, Quezon, Isabela.

Now population had increased tremendously, parents looked for the future of their children and they believed this could only be achieved through giving their children better education. So they requested one school building for their children and it was approved.

But one problem arose on where to construct the said school building. Finally, it was forwarded and constructed in Caramoc, Lepanto, Quezon, Isabela. With this, residents decided and agreed to adopt Kalangigan as the sole name of their barangay. And the word Kalangigan was further improved to Callanguigan, now a barangay and registered under the municipality of Quezon, Isabela.
